The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is an action-adventure game developed and published by Nintendo. It was released on March 3, 2017, for the Nintendo Switch and Wii U. It is the nineteenth main game in The Legend of Zelda series and is considered one of the most influential open-world games ever created.

The game was developed by Nintendo Entertainment Planning & Development (EPD) and directed by Hidemaro Fujibayashi, with producer Eiji Aonuma, who has been involved with many previous Zelda games. Development began shortly after the release of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword and focused on creating a new experience that allowed players more freedom than previous games in the series.

The story takes place in the kingdom of Hyrule, one hundred years after a catastrophic event known as the Great Calamity. A powerful force called Calamity Ganon attacked Hyrule, destroying the kingdom and defeating its defenders. The hero Link was badly injured during the battle and was placed into a healing chamber called the Shrine of Resurrection, where he slept for 100 years.

When Link awakens, he has lost most of his memories and must explore the ruined world to discover what happened. With guidance from mysterious voices and characters he meets along the way, Link learns about the past and prepares to defeat Calamity Ganon, who remains trapped inside Hyrule Castle.

The game follows Link as he attempts to recover his memories, awaken the power of the ancient machines called Divine Beasts, and gather the strength needed to save Princess Zelda and the kingdom of Hyrule.

One of the biggest changes in Breath of the Wild is its open-world design. Unlike many previous Zelda games, players are not forced to follow a specific path. After completing the opening area, they can explore almost the entire world immediately. Players can climb nearly any surface, glide through the air using the Paraglider, and approach challenges in many different ways.

The world of Hyrule is filled with mountains, forests, deserts, snowy regions, lakes, villages, and ancient ruins. Players can discover hidden locations, complete puzzles, fight enemies, collect resources, and uncover secrets. The game encourages curiosity and experimentation rather than giving players a strict set of objectives.

A major gameplay feature is the physics-based system, which allows players to interact creatively with the environment. The Sheikah Slate, a magical device given to Link at the beginning of the game, provides abilities such as:

  • Magnesis – Allows Link to move metal objects.
  • Remote Bombs – Creates bombs that can be placed anywhere.
  • Cryonis – Creates ice pillars from water.
  • Stasis – Temporarily freezes objects and allows players to build up force before releasing them.

Combat in Breath of the Wild involves using a variety of weapons, including swords, spears, bows, shields, and special equipment. Weapons have different strengths and durability levels, meaning they eventually break and must be replaced. This encourages players to constantly explore and find new equipment.

The game also introduced shrines, small puzzle areas scattered throughout Hyrule. Completing shrines rewards players with Spirit Orbs, which can be exchanged to increase Link’s health or stamina. There are also four major dungeons called Divine Beasts, which contain puzzles and boss battles.

Another important part of the game is survival. Link must manage resources by cooking food, collecting materials, preparing special meals, and wearing suitable clothing for different environments. For example, cold areas require warm clothing or heat-resistant items, while hot areas require protection from extreme temperatures.

Breath of the Wild received enormous praise for its freedom, exploration, art style, physics system, and innovative approach to open-world design. Many critics considered it a major turning point for open-world games because it allowed players to solve problems in creative and unexpected ways.

The game won numerous awards, including Game of the Year awards in 2017, and became one of Nintendo’s most successful games. It sold over 30 million copies worldwide when combined with its Nintendo Switch and Wii U releases, making it one of the best-selling games in the Legend of Zelda series.

A sequel titled The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom was released in 2023, expanding on the world of Breath of the Wild with new abilities, areas, and gameplay mechanics.

Overall, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is considered one of the greatest video games ever made. Its combination of exploration, creativity, freedom, and adventure changed how many modern open-world games are designed and introduced a new generation of players to the world of Zelda.
